The Lake House

Lakeside cabin you can walk everywhere from. One minute to the water, five to Bowness — and the whole Lake District on your doorstep.

Check Availability

Park once. Forget the car.

A thoughtfully designed cabin in Fallbarrow Park — one minute from the shore of Lake Windermere, five from the middle of Bowness.

The Lake House is built for families who want the Lake District without the logistics. The lake path starts behind the park; boat cruises, The World of Beatrix Potter, ice cream and dinner are all a stroll away. No car seats, no parking apps — just out the door and off.

Inside it's warm and simple to live in: a king bedroom with proper linens, a twin room for the kids, a sofa bed for one more, and a cosy living area where the electric fireplace and Smart TV settle the evenings. The kitchen has everything a self-catering week needs — and you'll arrive to a complimentary bottle of fizz, tea, coffee and biscuits.

You'll also have full access to Fallbarrow Park itself, including its restaurant, bar and bistro — handy for the night nobody wants to cook.

Afternoon

Evening

A last-night table at one of Bowness's cosier restaurants. You've earned it.

Every family moves at its own pace — treat this as a starting point, not a schedule. Ask us for tips any time; we know the quiet corners.

The ones nobody tells you about

Orrest Head

Twenty minutes uphill from Windermere town. This is the view that made Wainwright drop everything and move here. Kids manage it fine. Go at 7am and the whole lake is yours.

Stock Ghyll Force

A seventy-foot waterfall, ten minutes’ walk from the middle of Ambleside. Barely signposted. Nobody expects it to be that close to a car park.

Rydal Cave

A cavernous old slate quarry you walk straight into, with a shallow pool inside and stepping stones across it. Twenty-five minutes away, and the single best “where ARE we” moment for a seven-year-old in the whole south Lakes.

Claife Viewing Stations

Take the little car ferry across, then walk up to the ruined Georgian viewing station. Costs almost nothing and feels like an expedition.

Good to know

The questions families ask us most about The Lake House.

What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. It's fully self check-in — a lockbox at the cabin, with clear instructions sent before you arrive, so you're never waiting around with tired kids. Early check-in or late check-out is sometimes possible for a small charge — just message us ahead.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes — dogs are welcome. It's £40 for up to two, settled after booking, and that's the whole of it. Bringing more than two? Message us first. We ask that they stay off the sofa and beds and aren't left alone in the cabin. The lake path and woodland sniffs start one minute from the door.
How close are the lake and the town, really?
Genuinely close. The lake is about one minute's walk through the park. The middle of Bowness — restaurants, pubs, shops, boat cruises and The World of Beatrix Potter — is five minutes on foot. Most families park once on arrival and don't touch the car again.
Is there parking?
Yes — private parking for up to two cars right at the cabin.
What's provided for our stay?
Bed linens, towels and a fully equipped kitchen with cooking basics — plus a welcome tray with a complimentary bottle of fizz, tea, coffee and biscuits. A travel cot is available for little ones.
Is the WiFi good enough to work (or stream)?
Yes — high-speed Starlink WiFi throughout, and a Smart TV with Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ for rainy-afternoon film clubs.
Can we use the park facilities?
Yes — guests have full access to Fallbarrow Park during their stay, including its restaurant, bar and bistro, plus the park's direct lake access and grounds.
Can we barbecue at the cabin?
Sorry, no — barbecues of any kind (including disposables) aren't permitted at the cabin or anywhere on the grounds, under park rules. Bowness's restaurants have you covered.
