It will rain. That's the north-west, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The nearest indoor thing to both our Carnforth lodges is the heated pool on the park — about a five-minute walk, and you pay for it at reception rather than it coming with the lodge. Everything else here is within roughly twenty minutes' drive, sorted by how far you'll actually have to go, with a straight answer on whether the dog can come.

five minutes on foot: the pool
There's a 15-metre heated indoor pool on the park, with a steam room and a gym, plus a spa doing treatments if that's more your thing. One of our guests put it plainly after a May stay: "the kids loved the swimming pool, the lake and mini beach."
Here's the bit most listings go quiet about. The pool is a park facility, not a lodge one. You buy a pass at reception, by the day or by the week, and it isn't included in what you pay us. We'd rather you knew that before you packed the armbands than found out at the desk.
No dogs in the pool, obviously. If you want the full picture of what's on the park and what each bit costs, we've written the honest guide to South Lakeland Leisure Village — pool, restaurant, passes, the lot.
five minutes in the car: Carnforth, and a very famous railway platform
Carnforth is five minutes down the road and has a Booths and an Aldi, which covers the wet-afternoon essentials. The same guest flagged the thing we'd never have thought to mention: "There is a great chippy for those not wanting to eat 'out out' just by the Booths."
The one properly interesting thing in town is the station. Carnforth is where David Lean shot Brief Encounter in 1945, and the refreshment rooms on the platform have been restored to look like the set. There's a heritage centre alongside with displays on the station and the film, a little cinema running the film on a loop, a gift shop, parking and accessible toilets. Dogs are accepted — which makes it one of the few genuinely indoor options on this page where nobody has to wait in the car.
One warning worth having. It has shut for refurbishment over winter before — one listing had it closed right through to the start of March. Listings for this place go stale faster than most, so if you're going in the colder months, ring ahead rather than driving over on the strength of a website.
the play barn, for the under-eights
Greenlands Farm Village at Tewitfield has an indoor play barn, plus an open farm, a café and a farm shop. It's the right answer if you've got small children and three hours to fill. No dogs.
Check the day before you go. The play barn and the laser tag run at weekends and during school holidays rather than every day of the year — so a wet Tuesday in term time may not get you what you came for. The farm, the café and the shop keep longer hours.
off the same junction you came off: a tropical hall full of butterflies
Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is at Hale, near Milnthorpe, and it describes itself as five minutes off Junction 35 of the M6 — the same junction you'll have come off for the lodge. That makes it one of the easiest places to reach from here without thinking about it.
It's part indoor, part outdoor: lush indoor tropical halls and walkthrough enclosures alongside open-air spaces, which is precisely why it works when the weather doesn't. Open every day from 10am to 5pm except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, last entry half three, with a shop and a café. No dogs — which given it's full of other animals is not a surprise.
when it's drizzling rather than pouring: Leighton Moss
RSPB Leighton Moss is on Storrs Lane at Silverdale, and it's the one on this list that rewards bad weather rather than merely surviving it. There's a visitor centre with a café and a shop, and a string of hides out on the reserve — which are shelters, so you're out of the rain while you're sitting still, just not while you're walking between them. Bring waterproofs and treat it as a half-outdoors day.
The dog bit catches people out, so here it is properly. Dogs on leads are welcome in the visitor centre so you can reach the dog-friendly trail — but they're not allowed on the main reserve footpaths. Assistance dogs can go anywhere. Plenty of places will just tell you they're "dog-friendly"; that's not the whole story, and it's the sort of thing you want to know in the car park rather than after you've parked.
twenty minutes: Lancaster
Lancaster is about twenty minutes and it's the sensible call when the rain has properly set in, because you can park once and walk between things.
Williamson Park has the Butterfly House — a warm tropical house with butterflies, planting and a koi stream, which is a genuinely good forty minutes with children who've had enough of the car. The park itself opens 10am to 4pm from October through March, and 10am to 5pm from April to September. The city also has the castle and a couple of museums within a short walk of each other, so a washout afternoon has options. Assume no dogs indoors at any of them unless you've checked.
twenty minutes the other way: Morecambe
Morecambe's seafront is a good blustery walk with the dog when it's wet but not miserable, and the Winter Gardens is worth a look if something's on. This is the dog's day out on this page.
And no, the Eden Project isn't open yet. People ask, because it's been in the news for years. Work started on site in 2026 and it's currently slated to open in 2028. Lovely when it lands. Not a plan for this week.
and if you still want the Lakes
Fair enough — most people come this way for them. Windermere is about thirty-five minutes from either lodge, so a wet morning here and an afternoon on the lake is an entirely normal day. The trade-off between basing yourself in the Lakes and basing yourself just off the motorway is a whole argument in itself, and we've had it out properly here.
when it clears up
It usually does, at least for an hour. When it does, we've written up ten short walks near the lodges that little legs can actually finish — several are twenty minutes or less from the door, the dog can come on all of them, and most are better in that washed-out light you get after rain anyway.
what we can't tell you
Prices and opening times, and we're not going to guess at them. Admission costs change, winter hours change, and half the listings for these places are out of date — the heritage centre is proof of that. Every venue above publishes its own current information, and reception on the park will tell you what a pool pass costs today. Everything on this page about what a place is, where it is, whether it's indoors and whether the dog can come was checked in September 2026. Everything about what it costs, you should check yourself.
That's a slightly annoying sentence to write. It's still better than sending you somewhere on a price we made up.
which lodge
Everything on this page is the same distance from both our Carnforth lodges, because they're on the same park.
The Debonair has two full bathrooms with an en-suite off the main bedroom, and it's all on one level — which matters more than you'd think on the sort of day where four people come back wet at the same time. The Sahara sleeps the same six with one and a half bathrooms.
Both are five minutes from Junction 35, both are a short walk from the pool, and the dog is welcome at both.
Everything here was checked in September 2026. Opening times and prices change — check with the venue before you set off.
